My affinity for making goals and new year's resolutions is really nauseating to some people, I'm sure. Mostly I make my "big list" of goals on the academic calendar and use the new fiscal/calendar year as a way to revisit them. I'm in the process of adding some goals to my already-in-progress list from September.
For me, being able to revisit the goals I've made in the format of a word document is most useful and productive. I make a table with different columns and log my progress as the year goes on -- it helps me be more accountable.
Here is what it looks like (I've provided examples in each category):
This year I'm adding a few more to my list -- some are concrete and some are more abstract:
- Be more patient (abstract, obviously)
- Renew my vegan vows (concrete)
- Decide on and commit to a dissertation topic (concrete)
- Allow myself to relax (abstract)
I had a conversation with a friend of mine the other day and we were discussing and agreeing that it is really our responsibility to make the best attempt at this one go-around that we have on this earth. I truly believe this and keeping up with goals and improving in mind, body, and character are intertwined with that belief.
What kinds of resolutions are you all making this year?
My one resolution is to "do what I ought." I know what's best for me w/ regard to self-care, physical activity, diet and my relationships, but I don't always do "what I ought." I'm preparing to start it this week, since the new year brought a lot of new things to the table for me that needed sorting out first.
